Question

Find the coordinates of the point where the line through (5,1,6) and (3,4,1) crosses the ZX -plane.

Open in App
Solution

We know that the line passing through two points A(x1,y1,z1) and B(x2,y2,z2) is

xx1x2x1=yy1y2y1=zz1z2z1

So, the equation of line passing through (5,1,6) and (3,4,1) is

x535=y141=z616

x52=y13=z65=k (say)

Any point on this line is
x=2k+5,y=3k+1,z=5k+6

The line crosses ZX -plane when y = 0,

3k+1=0

k=13

So, the required point is

x=2(13)+5,

y=3(13)+1,

z=5(13)+6

x=173,y=0,z=233

Hence, the required coordinates of the point are : (173,0,233)
