$3 - \frac{12}{5}$

Fractions with same denominators are called like fractions.
The number $3$ can be written as $\frac{15}{5}$ .
$3 - \frac{12}{5} = \frac{15}{5} - \frac{12}{5}$
Since the fractions are like fractions. So, subtract numerators of both fractions keeping denominator unchanged to find their difference.

$∴$ $3 - \frac{12}{5} = \frac{15 - 12}{5}$ $= \frac{3}{5}$
