Question

Find the distance between P(x1, y1) and Q(x2, y2) when: (i) PQ is parallel to the y-axis (ii) PQ is parallel to the x-axis.

Open in App
Solution

Here P(x1, y1) and Q(x2, y2) are two points.

Then PQ=(x2x1)2+(y2y1)2

(i) PQ is parallel to the y-axis then x2x1=0

Then PQ=(y2y1)2=|y2y1|

(ii) PQ is parallel to the x-axis then y2y1=0

Then PQ=(x2x1)2=|x2x1|
