Question

Find the distance between P(x1,y1) and Q(x2,y2) when :
(i) PQ is parallel to the y axis.
(ii) PQ is parallel to the x axis.

Open in App
Solution

(i)
Since PQ is aparallel to y axis x1=x2
Distance PQ=(x2x1)2+(y2y1)2
=(x2x2)2+(y2y2)2
=(y2y1)2
=|y2y1| ( distance should be positive )

(ii)

Since PQ is aparallel to y axis y1=y2
Distance PQ=(x2x1)2+(y2y1)2
=(x2x1)2+(y2y2)2
=(x2x1)2
=|x2x1| ( distance should be positive )
