Question

Find the energy of photon in each of the following:
A. Microwaves of wavelength 1.5 cm
B. Red light of wavelength 660 nm
C. Radiowaves of frequency 96 MHz
D. Xrays of wavelength 0.17 nm

Solution

(a) Energy of photon is given by the following relation

E=hcλ

It is given that wavelength of microwave is

λ=1.5cm=0.015m

E=6.62×1034×3×1080.015

E=1324×1026J

(b) Red light of wavelength 660 nm

λ=660×109m

=6.62×1034×3×108660×109

=0.03×1017J

(c) Radio waves of frequency 96 MHz

ν=96×106Hz

λ=196×106

λ=0.0104×106m

E=6.62×1034×3×1080.0104×106

E=1909.6×1020J

(d) X− rays of wavelength 0.17 nm

λ=0.17×109m

E=6.62×1034×3×1080.17×109

E=116.82×1017J
