Question

Find the equation of hyperbola whose eccentricity is 2 and distance between foci is 16. Also name the hyperbola so obtained.

Given e=2 for hyperbola and distance between foci is 16 and we know distance between foci =2C=16
[C=8]
and C=a2+b2=8 ……….(1)
and e=2
We know a=CB=82=42
[a=42]
and from equation (1) we get
a2+b2=8
Squaring both sides we get
a2+b2=64
b2=6432
b2=32
[b=42]
Hence equation of hyperbola is x232y232=1.
