Find the equation of the line through (1, 3) and making an intercept of 5 on the y-axis.

Open in App
Solution

Since, y-intercept = 5, so the corresponding point on y-axis is (0, 5).

The line passes through (1, 3).

Slope of the line = fraction numerator 3 minus 5 over denominator 1 minus 0 end fraction equals fraction numerator negative 2 over denominator 1 end fraction equals negative 2

Required equation of the line is given by:

y - y1 = m(x - x1)

y - 5 = -2(x - 0)

y - 5 = -2x

2x + y = 5
