Find the equation of the line with x-intercept 5 and a point on it (-3, 2).

Open in App
Solution

Since, x-intercept is 5, so the corresponding point on x-axis is (5, 0).

The line also passes through (-3, 2).

Slope of the line = fraction numerator 2 minus 0 over denominator negative 3 minus 5 end fraction equals fraction numerator negative 1 over denominator 4 end fraction

Required equation of the line is given by:

y - y1 = m(x - x1)

y - 0 = fraction numerator negative 1 over denominator 4 end fraction (x - 5)

4y = -x + 5

x + 4y = 5
