Question

Find the equation of the locus of point P ,if the point A(2,3) and B(1,4) are at equal distance at P.

Open in App
Solution

Given: Condition that the point A(2,3) and B(1,4) are at equal distance at P(x,y).
AP=PB

Using distance formula in the above condition, we have
(x2)2+(y3)2=(x1)2+(y4)2

Squaring both sides, we get
(x2)2+(y3)2=(x1)2+(y4)2
x2+44x+y26y+9=x2+12x+y28y+16
44x6y+91+2x+8y16=0
2x+2y4=0
or xy+2=0 is the equation of the locus.
