Question

Find the equation of the straight line joining the point (a,b) to the point of intersection of the lines
xa+yb=1 and xb+ya=1
Also prove that sum of intercepts made by this
line on coordination axes is (ba)(a2b2)ab.

Open in App
Solution

Solving the equation by subtracting, we get x=y and putting in any, the point of intersection is (aba+baba+b). By two point formula the equation of the line joining this point and (a,b) is
a2yb2x=ab(ab)
Sum of intercepts
=ab(ab)[1a21b2]=abab(b2a2) etc.
