Question

Find the equations to the straight lines passing through (x,y) and respectively perpendicular to the straight lines
xx+yy=a2,
xxa2+yyb2=1,
and xy+xy=a2

Open in App
Solution

(1) xx+yy=a2yy=xx+a2y=xyx+a2y

Slope =m=xy

Let slope of other line be m

mm=1xym=1m=yx

Equation of perpendicular line

yy=yx(xx)yxyx=yxyxyxxy=0

(2) xxa2+yyb2=1

yyb2=xxa2+1y=b2xa2yx+b2y

Slope of line =m=b2xa2y

Let the slope of perpendicular line be m

mm=1b2xa2ym=1m=a2yb2x

Equation of perpendicular line is

yy=a2yb2x(xx)b2xyb2xy=a2yxa2yxa2yxb2xy=a2xyb2yxa2yxb2xy=(a2b2)xy

(3) xy+xy=a2
xy=yx+a2y=yxx+a2x

Slope of line =m=yx

Let slope of perpendicular line be m

mm=1yxm=1m=xy

Equation of perpendicular line is

yy=xy(xx)yyy2=xxx2yyxx=y2x2
