Question

Find the equilibrium constant for the reaction: In2++Cu2+In3++Cu+ at 298K.
Given: E0Cu2+/Cu+=0.15; E0In2+/In+=0.40V, E0In3+/In+=0.42V.

Solution

(i) Cu2++eCu+;EoCu2+/Cu+=0.15V
(ii) In2++eIn+;EoIn2+/In=0.40V
In3++2eIn+;EoIn3+/In+=0.42V
(iii) In+In3++2e;EoIn+/In3+=+0.42V
Adding )i), (ii) & (iii), we get,
In2++Cu2+In3++Cu+;Eo=0.150.40+0.42
Eo=0.17V
Now, ΔGo=RTlnKeq
nFEo=RTlnKeq
ln(Keq)=nFEoRT
=2×96500×0.178.314×298
lnKeq=13.24
Keq=e13.24
Keq=562417.6
Therefore, equilibrium constant is 562417.6
