Find the general values of x and y which make the following expression a perfect square:
x2+2xy+2y2.

Open in App
Solution

(x+y)2=z2y2
m(x+y)=n(z+y)
n(x+y)=n(zy)
By cross multiplication
xm2+2mn+n2=ym2n2=zm2+n2
Hence, x=m2+2mn+n2,y=m2n2 and the hypotenuse is m2+n2.
