Question

Find the gravitational potential at a point where the gravitational field intensity is zero due to two particles of masses m1=1 kg and m2=4 kg separated through a distance l=3m?

Open in App
Solution

Let the gravitational field intensity due to the point masses m1 and m2 be zero at P.
gP=0|g1+g2|=0
g1=g2 (numerically)
Gm1x2=Gm2(lx)2
lx2=4(3x)2
3xx=±2
3x=2x or, 3x=+2x
x=3(irrelevant) or x=1
VP=(Gm1x)+(Gm2lx)
=G[m1x+m2lx]
Putting G=6.67×1011Nm2/kg2
m1=1 kg,m2=4 kg,l=3m,x=1m, we obtain,
VP=6.67×1011(11+431)J/kg
=20.01×1011J/kg.
