Solution

The correct option is B Opuntia - Thorns
Adaptation refers to the morphological, physiological or behavioural adjustments that allow organisms to survive in new environments or in changing conditions in their current environment.

Xerophytic plants like Opuntia have developed mechanisms to reduce the rate of transpiration and prevent excessive water loss. The leaves are modified into thin and sharp spines so that the amount of exposed surface area for transpiration is reduced thereby minimising the rate of transpiration and water loss.

Opuntia lacks thorns. Thorns are hard, woody, pointed structures that provide protection to plants from grazing animals.

Kangaroo rats inhabit the deserts of North America. They are able to survive in the harsh desert conditions by developing certain adaptations. They oxidise the fats present in the body to obtain water when water is not available.

Being mammals, whales are warm-blooded animals/homeotherms that can maintain a constant body temperature, irrespective of the changes in the external temperature. This is achieved due to the presence of the fatty blubber that acts as an insulator and prevents the loss of body heat.

Unlike mammals which are able to maintain constant body temperature through physiological means, the desert lizards maintain their body temperature via behavioural means. When the desert becomes too hot during the day, it hides in shady places to keep itself cool. Whereas when the temperatures fall below its comfort zone, especially during the winter, it basks in the sun to keep itself warm.
