Solution

Step 1: Finding the value of ui

For determining the mean, we will use the step deviation method.

Let the assumed mean be a=40.

Here class size is h=10.

ui can be found by substituting the corresponding values in the formula ui=xi-ah.

MarksMid value xiNumber of students fiui=xi-ahui=xi-4010fiui
15-252060-2-120
25-353035-1-35
35-45402200
45-555018118
55-656015230
fi=150 fiui=-107

Step 2: Finding the mean

The formula used to determine the mean is x¯=a+hfiuifi.

where

a is the assumed mean,

h is the class size,

fi is the total frequency, and

ui=xi-ah

Substituting the values in the mean formula we get,

x¯=40+10-107150x¯=40-7.13x¯=32.87

Hence the mean of the frequency distribution is 32.87.
