Question

Find the minimum and maximum deflection angles for a light ray passing through a glass prism with refracting angle θ=60

Open in App
Solution

In the case of minimum deviation
sinα+θ2=nsinθ2
So, α=2sin1{nsinθ2}θ=37, for n=1.5
Passage of ray for grazing incidence and grazing imergence is the condition for maximum deviation. From fig.
a=xθ=π2θcr
(where θcr is the critical angle)
So, α=π2sin(1/n)=58,
for n=1.5=R.I. of glass.
