Question

Find the number of amphoteric oxide(s) from the following
NiO,Al2O3,B2O3,PbO2,ZnO,MgO.

Open in App
Solution

The trend is from strongly basic oxides on the left-hand side to strongly acidic ones on the right, via an amphoteric oxide (aluminium oxide) in the middle in the periodic table.

An amphoteric oxide is one which shows both acidic and basic properties. This trend applies only to the highest oxides of the individual elements in the highest oxidation states for those elements. The pattern is less clear for other oxides.

Non-metal oxide acidity is defined in terms of the acidic solutions formed in reactions with water—for example, sulphur trioxide reacts with water to forms sulfuric acid.

Weakly acidic : B2O3
Acidic:NiO
Amphoteric : Al2O3,ZnO
Basic : MgO,PbO2
Hence, two oxides are amphoteric in nature.
