Question

Find the number of molecule(s) which do not exist
NCl3,PCl3,PCl5,NCl5,PF2,OF4,OF6

Open in App
Solution

Out of NCl3,PCl3,PCl5,NCl5,PF2,OF4,OF6molecules, NCl5,PF2,OF4,OF6 molecules do not exist.

NCl5 does not exist because N does not have d orbitals and hence can not form 5 hybridization orbitals to form PCl5.

PF2 cannot exist because P can have a valency of 3 or 5 only.
OF4 and OF6 cannot exist because oxygen cannot have a covalency of 4 or 6.

So total number of molecules do not exist are 4.
