Solution

The correct option is D Bacillus thuringiensis
Single Cell Protein (SCP) refers to the edible protein extracted from pure microbial cultures, dead or dried cell biomass. It can be used as an alternative protein source or supplement for both humans and animals.

SCP is preferred over the conventional protein sources because it contains huge amount of proteins, that can be produced at a low cost in shorter time. Microorganisms such as algae, fungi, yeast, and bacteria can be used as SCP.

Examples include:
i) Algae : Spirulina, Chlorella
ii) Fungi : Candida, Saccharomyces
iii) Bacteria : Methylophilus methylotrophus

Hence option a, b and c are correct.

Bacillus thuringiensis is a bacteria from which cry genes were isolated and incorporated into crops, to create pest resistant crops. Such crops are called Bt crops and examples include Bt cotton, Bt brinjal, Bt soybean, etc.

The cry gene is responsible for the synthesis of protein crystals in the spore stage of bacteria. Insect larvae (corn borer) when ingest these spores, cry proteins will get released in their gut. These cry proteins will create pores on the gut membrane and affet the transportation of nutrients, as a result the larvae dies. Hence Bacillus thuringiensis is acting as a biopesticide not acting as a SCP. So option d is incorrect.
