a. C in CO2
b. Mn in MnSO4
c. N in HNO3 [3 Marks]

Open in App
Solution

a. C in CO2
1 (C) + 2 (O) = 0
x + 2 × (-2) = 0
x - 4 = 0 ‘
x = 4 .
Oxidation number of C in CO2 is +4 [1 Mark]

b. Mn in MnSO4
1 (Mn) + 1 (S) + 4 (O) = 0
x + 1 × 6 + 4 × (-2) = 0
x + 6 – 8 = 0
x – 2 = 0
x = 2
Oxidation number of Mn in MnSO4 is +2
[1 Mark]

c. N in HNO3
1 (H) + 1 (N) +3 (O) = 0
1 × 1 + x + 3 × (-2) = 0
1 + x – 6 = 0
x – 5 = 0
x = 5
Oxidation number of N in HNO3 is +5 [1 Mark]
