Using the formula: $(x + p) (x + q) = x^{2} + (p + q) x + p q .$

Taking $x = a$ , $p = - 8$ , $q = 2$ and substituting in the above formula we get,
$(a - 8) (a + 2) = a^{2} + [(- 8) + 2] a + (- 8) (2)$
$=$ $a^{2} - 6 a - 16$

Hence the correct answer is $a^{2} - 6 a - 16 .$
