Question

Find the ratio in which the point P (34,512) divides the line segment joining the points A (12,32) and B (2,5).

Open in App
Solution

Using the section formula, if a point (x,y) divides the line joining the points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) in the ratio m:n, then
(x,y)=(mx2+nx1m+n,my2+ny1m+n)
Therefore,
34=m×2+n×12m+n
3m+3n=8m+4×12n
3m+3n=8m+2n
3n2n=8m3m
n=5m
15=mn
m:n=1:5
