Solution

Suppose P(x, 2) divides the line segment joining the points A(12, 5) and B(4, −3) in the ratio k : 1.

Using section formula, we get

Coordinates of P = 4k+12k+1,-3k+5k+1

4k+12k+1,-3k+5k+1=x,2

x=4k+12k+1 and -3k+5k+1=2

Now,

-3k+5k+1=2-3k+5=2k+25k=3k=35

So, P divides the line segment AB in the ratio 3 : 5.

Putting k = 35 in x=4k+12k+1, we get
x=4×35+1235+1=12+603+5=728=9

Thus, the value of x is 9.
