Question

Find the ratio of speed of sound in hydrogen to the speed of sound in oxygen at 1270K.

Open in App
Solution

Velocity of sound in a gas is given by ,
v=γRT/M
Hence , velocity of sound in hydrogen is ,
vH=γHRT/MH
And velocity of sound in oxygen is ,
vO=γORT/MO
Now , γH=γO ,because both are diatomic gases .
Therefore ,
vHvO=MOMH
or vHvO=322=41
or vH:vO=4:1
