Question

Find the ratio of the lengths of an iron rod and an aluminium rod for which the difference in the lengths is independent of temperature. Coefficients of linear expansion of iron and aluminium are 12×106 C1 and 23×106 C1 respectively.

Solution

Iron RodAluminium RodLFeLAlαFe=12×106/CαAl=23×106/C

Since the difference in length is independent of temperature the diffrernce always remains constant

LFe=LFe (1+αFe×ΔT) (1)

LAl=LAl(1+αAl×ΔT)–––––––––––––––––––––––––– (2)

LFeLAl=LFeLAl+LFe×αFeΔTLAl×αAl×ΔT

Given

LFeLAl=LFeLAl

Hence LFe αFe=LAl αAl

LFeLAl=2312
