Question

Find the ratio of the weights, as measured by a spring balance, of a 1 kg block of iron and a 1 kg block of wood. Density of iron = 7800 kg m3, density of wood = 800 kg m3 and density of air = 1.293 kg m3.

Solution

Net weight of iron block,

w1=mgV1ρair×g

= [m(mρ1)ρair]g

= [1(17800)×1.293]×(9.8)

Again, Net weight of wood

= Ww=mgVwρairg

= [m(mρw)ρair]g

= (11800×1.293)9.8

W1ww=9.8(78001.2937800)9.8(8001.293800)

= 78001.2938001.293×878=1.0015
