Solution

(i) Let r=0.142857 and r can be rewritten as follows:

r=0.142857=1428571000000.....(1)

(ii) Let r=0.¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯142857 then 106r will be:

106r=106×0.¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯142857=142857.¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯142857

Now we find 106rr as follows:

106rr=142857.¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯1428570.¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯142857=142857.0r(1061)=142857999999r=142857r=142857999999r=17.....(2)

From equations (1) and (2) we get that the two rational numbers are not the same.
