Find the rule which gives the number of sticks used for creating the following pattern. Also find the number of stick used to from a group of 50 shapes.

Solution:
Number of sticks used in Shape 1 = 3 = $(2\times 1)+1$ (0.5 marks)

Number of sticks used in Shape 2 = 5 = $(2\times 2)+1$
Number of sticks used in Shape 3 = 7 = $(2\times 3)+1$
Number of sticks used in Shape n = $(2\times n)+1=2n+1$ (1 mark)
Number of sticks used in Shape 50 = $(2\times 50)+1=100+1=101$ (0.5 marks)
101 sticks are used in making 50 such shapes.
