Find the single discount (as percent) equivalent to successive discounts of :
(i) 80% and 80%
(ii) 60% and 60%
(iii) 60% and 80%
(i) Successive discounts=80% and 80%
Let M.P.=Rs. 100
Then S.P. after two discounts
=Rs. 100(100−80)×(100−80)100×100
=Rs. (100×20×20100×100)=Rs. 4
∴ Total discounts =Rs. 100−4=Rs. 96
∴ Single discount=Rs. 96%
(ii) Successive discounts =60% and 60%
Let M.P.=Rs. 100
Then S.P after two discounts,
=(100(100−60)(100−60)100×100)
=(100×40×40100×100)
=Rs. 16
∴ Total discount =Rs. 100−16=Rs. 84
Single discount =84%
(iii) Successive discounts =60% and 80%
Let M.P.=Rs. 100
∴ S.P. after two discounts
=Rs. (100(100−60)(100−80)100×100)
=Rs. (100×40×20100×100)
=Rs. 8
∴ Total discount =Rs. 100−8=Rs. 92
∴ Single discount =92%
