Solution

The correct option is D 40%

Given,
two successive discounts on an article are 25% and 20%.

Let,
the marked price of an article be ₹ 100.

Now,
First discount of 25%
= 25% of ₹ 100
= ₹ 25

Price after 1st discount
= ₹ 100 - ₹ 25
= ₹ 75

Second discount of 20%
= 20% of ₹ 75
= ₹ 15

Price after 2nd discount
= ₹ 75 - ₹ 15
= ₹ 60

Therefore, Single discount in percentage equivalent to two given successive discounts
= (change in price / initial price) × 100
= (100 - 60 / 100) ×
100
= 40 %
