The Associative Property of Addition of Integers: The sum of three or more integers does not depend on the way they are grouped, or if, $a, b, c$ are three integers, then $a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c$
Using the associative property, we get:
$(- 1123) + (- 17) + 840 = [(- 1123) + (- 17)] + 840$
$= (- 1140) + 840$
$= (- 300)$ (Here… $1140 > 840$ .So, we shall subtract $840$ from $1140$ and will use the sign of $1140$ )
Therefore, the sum is $- 300$
