Question

Find the typical de Broglie wavelength associated with a He atom in helium gas at room temperature (27°C) and 1 atm pressure; and compare it with the mean separation between two atoms under these conditions.

Solution

Mass of He atoms,

m=AtomicmassofHeAvogadrosnumber

=46×1023gm=6.67×1027kg

De-broblie wavelength,
λ=hp=h3mkTm

=6.63×10343×6.67×1027×1.38×1023×300m

λ=7.3×1011m

Now using the kinetic gas equation for one mole of a gas

PV=RT=kNTVN=kTP

Mean Separation,

r0=(MolarvolumeAvogardosnumber)13=(VN)13=(kTP)13r0=(1.38×1023×3001.01×105)13mr0=3.4×109m

So, from the above calculation we say that the mean separation between two atoms is much larger than the de-Broglie wave length.
