Question

Find the unit and dimensional formula of the universal gravitational constant

Open in App
Solution

Step1: Calculating the dimensional formula of force

Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity with time so, we can say that a=vt

Here velocity is divided by time again we will substitute the dimensional formulas of velocity band time to get the dimensional formula for acceleration

a=LT-1Ta=[LT-2]

Force is defined as the mass time of acceleration so,

Force=Mass×AcceleartionF=[M]×[LT-2]Dimensionalformulaofforce=M1L1T-2..........equation(i)

Step 2: Calculating dimensional formula of universal gravitational constant

The gravitation constant is the proportionality constant that was used in Newton's law of gravitation.

G=F×r2m1m2G=F×r2×m1m2-1......equation(ii)

On substituting equation (i) in equation (ii) we get

G=[M1L1T-2]×[L2]×[M]-2As,Mass=[M]G=[M-1L3T-2]

Hence, the unit of universal gravitational constant is Nm2/kg2 and the dimensional of universal gravitational constant is M-1L3T-2.
