Question

Find the value of -38-(-8)-(-10)+(-5).

Open in App
Solution

-38-(-8)-(-10)+(-5)

= [(-38)-(-8)]-(-10)+(-5)

=[(-38)+8]-(-10)+(-5) (To subtract an integer from another integer, we add the opposite of the integer that is being subtracted to the other integer)

=(-30)-(-10)+(-5) (The sum of a positive and a negative integer is calculated by subtracting the absolute value of the smaller number from the absolute value of the greater number and the result takes the sign of the number which has a greater absolute value)

=[(-30)+10]+(-5)

=(-20)+(-5)

=-25 ( The sum of two negative integers is calculated by adding the absolute values of both the integers and putting a minus sign in the result)

Hence, the value of -38-(-8)-(-10)+(-5) is -25.
