Question

Find the value of a and b if b is four more than the half of a and a = b.
The answer is given that the value of both a and b is 8 but I didn't understand the method.

Solution

It says b is 4 more than half of a
and it also says that a = b
so we can say that a is 4 more than half of a since a and b have same value
(that is, if b is 4 more than half of a, a is also 4 more than half of a)
How do we put that in an equation?
a = 1/2 a + 4
Now if we subtract 1/2 a from both sides we get
1/2 a =4
Multiply by 2
a = 8
and b = a = 8 also
