Find the value of A + B in the given magic square. (4 marks)

Open in App
Solution

In a magic square, sum of numbers in any row, column, or diagonal is same.

The magic sum of the given square = Sum of numbers in the first column = 3 + 8 + 1 = 12 (1 mark)

Also, sum of 2nd column = B + 4 + 6 = 12
Thus, B = 12 - (6 + 4) = 12 - 10 = 2 (1 mark)

So, Sum of third column = 12
Thus, A = 12 - (7 + 5) = 12 - 12 = 0 (1 mark)

Hence, A + B = 0 + 2 = 2 (1 mark)
