Question

Find the value of y.zx, if the following molecules undergo dimerization:
I. ClO3
II. OF2
III. GaH3
IV. AlCl3
V. ICl3
VI. BeH2
VII. NO2
x: Number of molecules which are hypervalent in dimeric form
y: Number of molecules with a complete octet in dimeric form
z: Number of molecules which are hypovalent in dimeric form

Solution

Points to remember:
Hypervalent: More than 8 e in their valence shells.
hypovalent: less than 8e in their valence shells.
Number of molecules which are hypervalent in dimeric form (x) = ClO3, ICl3
Number of molecules with a complete octet in dimeric form (y) = NO2,OF2 and GaH3
Number of molecules which are hypovalent in dimeric form (z) = AlCl3, BeH2

So, y×zx=3×22=3
