Question

Find the value of discriminant of each of the following equations.
x2 + 4x + 1 = 0

Open in App
Solution

Given: x2 + 4x + 1 = 0

On comparing this equation with ax2 + bx + c = 0, we get:

a = 1, b = 4 and c = 1

We know that the discriminant of a quadratic equation, Δ = b2 – 4ac.

On substituting a = 1, b = 4 and c = 1, we get:

Δ = (4)2 – 4(1)(1)

Δ = 16 – 4 = 12
