Solution

The correct option is C

2

Explanation for the correct option

Given system of equations is

x+(k+1)y=5i(k+1)x+9y=8k-1ii

Comparing with general form a1x+b1y+c1=0 and a2x+b2y+c2=0

We get a1=1,b1=k+1,c1=5

a2=k+1,b2=9,c2=8k-1

We know that, for a pair of linear equations to have infinitely many solutions,

a1a2=b1b2=c1c2

1(k+1)=(k+1)9=5(8k-1)(iii)

Take first term and second term in (iii)

1(k+1)=(k+1)9(k+1)2=9k+1=3,k+1=-3k=2k=-4

Take first and last (iii)

1(k+1)=5(8k-1)5(k+1)=8k-15k+5=8k-13k=6k=2

So, when k=2 the given system of equations has infinite solutions.

Hence, option C is correct.
