Question

Find the value of m for which (2x – 1) is a factor of (8x4 + 4x3 – 16x2 + 10x + m).

Open in App
Solution

Let f(x) = 8x4 + 4x3 – 16x2 + 10x + m

It is given that 2x-1=2x-12 is a factor of f(x).

Using factor theorem, we have

f12=08×124+4×123-16×122+10×12+m=012+12-4+5+m=0
2+m=0m=-2
Thus, the value of m is −2.
