Question

Find the value of p for which (x+2) is a factor of the polynomial
f(x)=2x3+px2+x10

Open in App
Solution

Given polynomial is f(x)=2x3+px2+x10.
And (x+2) is a factor of f(x).
According to the factor theorem, if (xa) is a factor of f(x), then f(a)=0.

Hence, f(2)=0

2(2)3+p(2)2+(2)10=0

4p=12+16

p=7

Hence, if (x+2) is a factor of the given polynomial, f(x), then p=7.
