Given, $5 x - 12 = 2 x - 6$

$\Rightarrow 5 x - 2 x = - 6 + 12$ ...[Transposing $x$ terms to one side]

$\Rightarrow 3 x = 6$ ...[On simplifying]

$\Rightarrow x = \frac{6}{3} = 2$ ...[Dividing $3$ on both sides]

$∴ x = 2$ .
