We know,
Opposite sides of a parallelogram are equal.
$x + 3 y = 5$ .. (i)
$x + 2 y = 4$ .. (ii)

Now, subtracting (ii) from (i), we get
$(x + 3 y) - (x + 2 y) = 5 - 4$
$y = 1$ ... (iii)
Putting (iii) in (i), we get
$x + 3 \times 1 = 5$
$x = 5 - 3$
$x = 2$
