Question

Find the value of x + y and x - y from the examples given below without solving for x and y:

(i) 4x + 3y = 24; 3x + 4y = 25

Open in App
Solution

4x+3y=24 ...(i)3x+4y=25 ...(ii)Here we observe that the coefficients of x and y in the first equation are interchanged in the second equation.Adding these two equations, we get: 4x+3y=24 +3x+4y=25 7x+7y=49 7x+y=49 x+y=7 ...(iii)Subtracting eq (ii) from (i), we get: 4x+3y=24 3x+4y=25 - - - x-y =-1 ...(iv) From (iii) and (iv), we get: x+y=7 and x-y =-1
