Question

Find the values of α and β for which the following system of linear equations has infinite number of solutions:
2x+3y=7
2αx+(α+β)y=28.

Solution

he given system of equations is
2x+3y7=0
2αx+(α+β)y28=0

This system of equation is of the form
a1x+b1y+c1=0
a2x+b2y+c2=0

where a1=2,b1=3,c1=7
and a2=2α,b2=(α+β) and c2=28

For infinitely many solutions, we must have
a1a2=b1b2=c1c2

The given system of equations will have infinite number of solutions, if

22α=3α+β=728

1α=3α+β=14

1α=14 and 3α+β=14

α=4 and α+β=12

α=4 and β=8

Hence, the given system of equations will have infinitely many solutions, if α=4 and β=8.
