or 48 = 50 − 2
∴ 48² = (50 − 2)²
Thus, we can use the identity (a − b)² = a² − 2ab + b² .
∴ 48² = (50 − 2)²
= (50)² − 2 (50) (2) + (2)²
= 2500 − 200 + 4
= 2500 + 4 − 200
= 2504 − 200
= 2304
