Mean $= \frac{5 + 8 + 11 + 14 + 17}{5} = \frac{55}{5}$
Mean $= μ = 11$
Variance $= \sum {(x_{i} - μ)}^{2} / n$
$= \frac{1}{5} [{(5 - 11)}^{2} + {(8 - 11)}^{2} + {(11 - 11)}^{2} + {(14 - 11)}^{2} + {(17 - 11)}^{2}]$
$= \frac{1}{5} [36 + 9 + 0 + 9 + 36]$
