Question

Find the vector that must be added to the vector ^i3^j+2^k and 3^i+6^j7^k so that the resultant vector is a unit vector along the y- axis.

Open in App
Solution

Given,
A=^i3^j+2^k
B=3^i+6^j7^k
Let C be x^i+y^j+z^k
Resultant vector, R=^j|R|=1
So, A+B+C=^j
^i3^j+2^k+3^i+6^j7^k+x^i+y^j+z^k=^j
(4+x)^i+2(2+y)^j+(5+z)^k=0
On comparing, 4+x=0 x=4
2+y=0 y=2
z5=0 z=5
C=4^i2^j+5^k.
It must be added to get the desired result.
