Question

find the velocity of light in benzene with R.I of1.50 when it is travelling from a water medium whose absolute R,I is 1.30 ? state whether the ray diverges or converges while entering into benzene medium ?

Solution

Dear student,
Find the answer to your query as under:

The speed of light in air = c = 3 ×108 m/s

Now,

speed in water = c/RIwater
speed in water = 2.3 × 108 m/s

similarly,

speed in benzene = c/RIbenzene
speed in benzene = 6 × 106 m/s

Now,

since, RIbenzene > RIwater , this implies that benzene is optically denser than the water hence a ray coming from water and entering into benzene would bend towards the normal OR, in other words, it will CONVERGE
